'''2. Join the [https://www.transifex.com/otf/torproject/dashboard/ Tor Project and Tor Project Web Translation Team]:'''

'''3. Download Tor Browser:'''
:'''Consider downloading [https://www.torproject.org/download/ Tor Browser] for the platforms you are translating''' This will allow you to get comfortable with the tool and view the original English strings and translations in context. Tor Browser is available to download on “Android”, “Linux”, “macOS” and “Windows”.

'''4. Start Translating from the [[#Translation Priorities and Resources]]:'''
:The list of resources and translation priorities will help you decide which content to work on first in the Psiphon project. Some resources are much more important to work on than others because they affect a larger number of Psiphon users. Dedicate your time on the resources that will make the most impact for users first.
The first ever Arusha Women School of Internet Governance (AruWSIG) took place on the 27th and 28th of April 2018 at Arusha Accountancy Institute (AAI). The event was organized by Digital Grassroots Tanzania country coordinator, Rebecca Ryakitimbo. Digital Grassroots President, Esther Mwema, travelled from Zambia to host a session at the maiden event that hosted 90 youth participants in Arusha, Tanzania.

For the last three years, Localization Lab has partnered with AruWSIG, to localize different tools and resources into Swahili, through localization sprints. These sprints are structured in a way that every fellow gets an opportunity to go through and translate an entire resource, and afterward the document is given to reviewers for editing purposes. A lot of people around the world have benefited from the localization of different tools and resources, with its importance becoming increasingly more well known today.

However none of this would be possible without the volunteer contributors, who offer their time to take part in this localization sprints. Most of these contributors are fellows who have been selected to be part of AruWSIG. Despite the efforts being made to increase the number of women in the internet governing space, women are still underrepresented. Being a women-focused event, AruWSIG offers fellows a unique opportunity to be part of this male-dominated space.

For the last three years, Localization Lab has partnered with AruWSIG, to Localize different tools and resources into Swahili language, through the Localization sprints.This sprints are structured in away that every fellow gets an opportunity to go through the entire translation resource. And after the document is given to reviewers for editing purposes.
A lot of people around the world have benefited from the localization of different tools and resources, with its importance becoming increasingly more well known today.

However non of this would be possible without the volunteer translators, who offer their time to take part in this localization sprints. Most of this volunteers are fellows who have been selected to be part of AruWSIG. Despite the efforts being made to increase the number of women in the internet governing space, women are still underrepresented and hence AruWSIG being a being a women only event, offers this fellows a unique opportunity to be part of this male dominated space.
:The list of resources and translation priorities will help you decide which content to work on first in the Psiphon project. Some resources are much more important to work on than others because they affect a larger number of Psiphon users. Dedicate your time on the resources that will make the most impact for users first.
===Glossaries===

===Style Guides===

In an effort to have uniform Serbian translations, we urge translators to follow these guidelines. These are guidelines and not rules, and the translators should also take care of the uniformity of the translations for each project.

This guide assumes translation to cyrillic, so some of the rules are not applicable if the project uses Serbian latin alphabet.

====Addressing the user====

When addressing the user, use lowercase formal plural (''ви/ваш'') or first person singular (''ти/твој'') form. In projects that try to have a more informal user experience, singular might be more appropriate. Make sure that your choice is consistent throughout the project, in order to keep the translation clean and not confusing.

====Gendered words====

When referencing a person of unknown gender, use combined masculine and feminine form as seen in example(s) below:
* Петар Петровић вас је позвао/ла.

If there is a character length restriction, which are already an issue when translating to Serbian, try using passive:
* Позвао вас је Петар Петровић.

====English names and commonly used words====

Keep English names and abbrevations in their original spelling because while some are easily recognized and understood when transcribed and transliterated ("''Фејсбук''" – Facebook, "''Гугл''" – Google) others are not ("''Epl''" – Apple, "''иОС''" – iOS).

Technical terms should be translated if possible or transcribed. Acronyms and abbrevations should be transliterated only if they are commonly used as such.

Examples:
* Постави на YouTube
* Проследи GIF
* Преузето са GitHub-а
* Корисник вам је послао имејл
* Ресетуј апликацију

====Capitalization====

For titles and other cases where there is a phrase where the first letter of each word is capitalized (for example "''Privacy Policy''"), the proper way to capitalize in Serbian is to only capitalize the first letter of the phrase ("''Правила о приватности''"). There are exceptions to this rule, when the phrase/title includes words that are capitalized anyway (names of people, organizations, countries, etc).

====Quotation marks====

Use ''„'' and ''”'' for double quotation marks, and ''’'' for single quoatation marks.

You can also comment on strings in Transifex, but please tag a reviewer for your language, because Transifex comments can otherwise easily go unnoticed.

==Style guide==
Ask yourself: "If my 65 year old mother read this (who has a total of 3 apps on her phone and uses only one of them on a weekly basis), would she understand this without anyone's help?". The goal is not to translate words, the goal is to make the text understandable to people who grew up in a different country.

===Signal Messenger===
''This Style guide is a result of reviewers communicating about inconsistencies and solutions to those.

===Other projects===

==Tips for consistency==
* Use the suggestions tab in Transifex to see if a similar string has already been translated before
* Use the glossary tab to see if a particular word has a suggestion
* Always read the comments on the string
* Look at the string key, to see what it is called in the code
* If you want, you could take a look at the source code in GitHub. Just reading the titles of recent commits could already give you a helpful clue.
* If you are not sure about the context, ask other translators in the comments, leave the string untranslated or give it your best guess and come back later to review it.
* ANY time you edit a translation on a project with multiple separate resources, make sure to open all the resources and check if the same string exists elsewhere to apply the exact same edit there. An example would be when you edit a string in the Android Signal messenger app, make sure to also check if the same string exists in the Desktop app, the iOS app, the website or the support center. It's not easy for other reviewers to spot the inconsistency later, so do this right away at the very moment you make an edit.
* Be extra careful with plurals in Transifex, it's easy to miss one of the plural forms when reviewing. You can check all plurals again by searching for pluralized:yes
* Found a spelling mistake, grammar mistake, word order mistake or some word which is better substituted with another word? Don't just correct it when you see it and move on, check all the strings on all the resources for the same mistake or imperfection and correct that mistake on all the strings where it occurs. The moment you noticed something is the only opportunity to come up with a consistent solution across all the strings.

==How to review==
* If there is a Beta version of the website or app you are translating, you should probably be using it so you have early knowledge of where the string will occur , in what context, and how much space is available
* See if the string provides clear information, and that users don't have to guess about its meaning.
* Make sure all the punctuation is accurate, the capitalization is accurate, there are no double white spaces, and no missing white spaces
* Make sure all symbols and next line match with the original string
* Make sure the vocabulary matches that of other strings
* Make sure the structure of the sentence matches that of other strings
* Make sure the exact same phrase, with the same vocabulary and same sentence structure is used across various projects of the same organization, for example in the case of Signal messenger, across the iOS app, Desktop app, Android app, Support Center, Website and App store.
* Make sure the string fits in the available space. However if you feel the available space is insufficient, do not come up with some unreadable string, but instead contact the developer about creating additional space for translated strings.
* Don't just look at untranslated string, some strings are automatically translated by Transifex but might still be wrong because the context requires a different translation. use source_updated_after:dd-mm-yyyy to find all the new strings. Also check for edits made by others, using translation_updated_after:dd-mm-yyyy .

==Language Resources==
''Please use the following resources to guide the style, tone and terminology you use across Localization Lab supported projects. Note: These resources are not are not final. If you disagree with terminology or grammar choices, please escalate the issue to the Localization Lab team for further discussion with other language team contributors for this language.''

===Grammar and word order in sentences===

===Style and tone===
* First follow any style guide you find here on this wiki for language and project you are working on
* If you are missing something, contact other translators
* If you search for style advise from other websites, avoid getting it from tech companies who make up their own version of the language based on marketing rather than the language everyday people use. Also avoid other wiki's which are often written by opinionated people who are not representative for the language. That doesn't mean you can't read them and learn from them, but take it with a grain of salt.
==Style Guides==

In an effort to have uniform Greek translations, we urge translators to follow these guidelines. These are guidelines and not rules, and the translators should also take care of the uniformity of the translations for each project.

===Addressing the user===

When addressing the user, you can use singular (ενικός) or formal plural (πληθυντικός ευγενείας) forms. Usually, Greek translators choose to use the formal plural, but in projects that try to have a more informal user experience, singular might be more appropriate. Make sure that your choice is consistent throughout the project, in order to keep the translation clean and not confusing.

===Gendered words===

When referencing a person of unknown gender (for example "''the user''"), the classical way of translating is by only using the masculine forms of nouns, pronouns and adjectives (for example "''ο χρήστης''"). Despite the widespread use of this approach, there has been criticism that it is very patriarchal and excludes females. A different, more inclusive approach is to use both genders (for example "''ο χρήστης ή η χρήστης''" or "''ο/η χρήστης''"). There is a specific [http://www.minadmin.gov.gr/wp-content/uploads/20160301_odigos_mi_sexistikis_.pdf regulation on non-sexist language usage] by the Greek secretariat of gender equality towards all public entities, urging them to use inclusive forms ("''η/ο χρήστρια/της''") as much as possible.

However, the inclusive approach might not be appropriate at cases where there are character length restrictions, which are already an issue when translating to Greek (Greek words tend to be longer than English ones). In such cases, using masculine-only forms cannot be avoided.

===Commonly used English words===

Some technical words are very commonly used in their English form in Greek. To keep the translations shorter and easier to understand quickly, it is more appropriate to leave some words in English, ensuring uniformity throughout.

Examples:
*Email

===Capitalization===

For titles and other cases where there is a phrase where the first letter of each word is capitalized (for example "''Privacy Policy''"), the proper way to capitalize in Greek is to only capitalize the first letter of the phrase ("''Πολιτική απορρήτου''"). There are exceptions to this rule, when the phrase/title includes words that are capitalized anyway (names of people, organizations, countries, etc).

So for example the following title "''The United Kingdom Will Leave The European Union By The End Of The Year''" translates to "''Το Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο θα αποχωρήσει από την Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση μέχρι το τέλος του έτους''".
