Founded in 2012, the Open Observatory of Network Interference (OONI) is a non-profit free software project that aims to empower decentralized efforts in documenting internet censorship around the world.

To this end, OONI has built the following tools:

  • OONI Probe: Free software that you can run to measure various forms of internet censorship. Available for both mobile (Android, F-Droid, iOS) and desktop (Windows, macOS, Linux) platforms.
  • OONI Run: Web platform that you can use to coordinate the OONI Probe testing of websites with your community.
  • OONI Explorer: Open data resource on internet censorship around the world. Since 2012, OONI Probe users have contributed more than 1.5 billion network measurements from 241 countries and territories, shedding light on cases of internet censorship worldwide.

4. Review the #Translation Guidelines:

Make sure you are familiar with Localization Lab's Translation Guidelines before you begin translating. They contain important information like whether or not to translate or transliterate the project name.

Language Priorities

These priorities are determined based on the following factors: (a) levels of internet censorship in countries where these languages are spoken, (b) whether that language is spoken in many countries (that experience moderate-high levels of censorship):

  • Arabic
  • Chinese (Simplified)
  • Farsi
  • French
  • Spanish
  • Russian

Translation Guidelines

Please refer to the Localization Lab’s Translation and Review Guidelines.

  • Do not translate or transliterate the app name. If it is necessary to transliterate for users in your language, please leave “OONI”, "OONI Probe", “OONI Explorer”, “OONI Run” in Latin letters followed by the transliterated name in parentheses. Ex: OONI (أوني).

We also encourage you to refer to OONI’s translation guidelines, Glossary and FAQ:
